  • Willesborough Mill, Ashford, Kent

    New sweeps have recently been fitted to the fine smock mill at Willesborough near Ashford in Kent. The mill dates from 1869, replacing an earlier windmill on the same site. It is open to visitors during the summer months. One of the mill's 21st century functions is to provide an unusual venue for civil wedding ceremonies!

    The Mills Archive catalogue contains an increasing number of items relating to Willesborough Mill. These are progressively being added as part of the Kent Millers' Tales project, an educational initiative designed to promote interest in the use of archives as a gateway to material relating to Kent's mill heritage. The Millers' Tales project will culminate with the launch of its own designated website later this year.

    • Stanley Freese (1902 - 1972)
      Stanley's interest began on holiday at Darsham, Suffolk in 1923. He cycled all over the British Isles sketching and photographing mills. He lived at South Heath near Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire and retired to Wenhaston, Suffolk, in 1964 where his interest in Suffolk windmills was to continue. In Search of English Windmills was published in 1931 by Cecil Palmer, London. Windmills and Millwrighting appeared in 1957 published by Cambridge University Press, and was later reprinted by David & Charles in 1971. He collaborated with Brian Flint in the compilation of a book on Suffolk mills and his contributions are now included in Suffolk Windmills by Brian Flint, published by Boydell Press, Woodbridge.
